Abstract
The article presents philosophical, philological, linguistic and terminological arguments for the use of the loanword “informal” education/learning in the Bulgarian language, instead of the inaccurate translation “self-study”. Informal education is essentially the life experience that we accumulate from birth to the end of our lives in any context. The growing internationalization in the field of education requires the introduction into Bulgarian legislation of the procedure for validating knowledge, skills and competencies acquired through informal learning. This avoids problems with the development of the language, with translation, with the regulatory framework and with communication, especially with the back translation of a concept whose content and scope could hardly be translated into Bulgarian with a single and unambiguous word. Because “Informal” is part of a logical triad with a Latin root that has passed into other European languages: formal education/learning), non-formal education/learning and informal education/learning.
