Abstract

A correct assessment of the market situation is essential to the development of a successful competitive strategy. Analyzing the market signals that firms send through their actions can reveal their intentions, goals, and market positions. Competitive signals can be credible or misleading, intended to mislead competitors. It is important to distinguish real signals from bluffing in order to avoid wrong strategic actions. Market information may be expressed through announcements of future actions, comments on the business environment or results after changes have been made. These signals must be analyzed carefully, as they may contain hidden messages intended to provoke competitive reactions or reduce tension. After all, ignoring market signals is tantamount to ignoring the competition itself, so reading them correctly is a key element of a successful business strategy.
