Abstract

This study examines the perceived importance of leadership qualities in the context of intergenerational succession and sustainable development in Bulgarian family businesses. Findings reveal a dual leadership profile: while decisiveness under pressure is universally valued, succession emphasizes vision, responsibility, and communication, whereas sustainability highlights adaptability, financial literacy, and cross-generational collaboration. The analysis underscores the need to integrate strategic, interpersonal, and emotional intelligence competencies in preparing future leaders.
By offering an empirically grounded, culturally specific perspective, the article contributes to the literature on family business leadership and provides insights for succession planning in transitional economies.
