Abstract

Cross-cultural dialogue and the role of modern communications in promoting cultural values are among the proven potentials of heritage tourism. The enhancement of communication between different cultures and the constant exchange of cultural values through cross-cultural dialogue reshape the travelers’ views of life. This dialogue is supported by the Alliance of Civilizations initiative which seeks to establish a paradigm of mutual respect between civilizations and cultures.

Heritage tourism builds the most exciting and emotional of all bridges owing to information and communication that generate mutual understanding, curiosity, and tolerance. This has been proven by heritage tourism practices in China, Egypt, Turkey, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, and the Netherlands. Travelers are faster in understanding a different culture. They tend to communicate more easily and build a stronger confidence in other nations’ cultural values. These were the conclusions drawn from UNESCO’s work on the strategic objective of the Dialogue Among Civilizations Organization.

How do we get to know civilizations, how do we discover cultural values, how do we communicate with people belonging to different nations in a world of ever growing dynamic change? Heritage tourism gives some of the answers to these questions, based on the knowledge of the ways to manage cultural differences. Through effective communication, advertising, special events and, most of all, public relations, modern tourism makes it possible to establish an open and fruitful dialogue among civilizations.
