Abstract

ABSTRACT: China’s rich cultural heritage is at the basis of the country’s unique cultural tourism that falls into several subtypes and attracts each year millions of tourists fascinated by the experiences and knowledge local heritage and natural resource offer them. Heritage-related cultural tourism includes ancient settlements, ethnographic reserves, historical landmarks, museums, architectural sites, castles, monasteries, art galleries etc. This is the type of tourism the present paper is dedicated to. However, due to the limitations of scope, this publication will only focus on some of the abovementioned sites.
The unique Forbidden City (Imperial Palace) and the Capital Museum in Beijing, the Terracotta Warriors & Horses Museum in Xian and the Shanghai Museum attract the greatest interest and the highest number of visitors. These museums draw the attention of millions of international tourists and are subject to heritage preservation policies. At the same time, they are a positive example of how to expose heritage to the modern tourist gaze using new technologies and effective messages addressed to the various publics. They fascinate visitors by offering them unique collections and attract children and youth publics though interactivity and effective communication.
