Abstract
This report deals with one of the types of sentencing in Bulgarian criminal law by which the convicted person is discharged from effective imprisonment, known as “conditional sentencing”. The historical review aims to brief the reader about the extensive development of this criminal law institute. The idea of conditional sentencing is to be applied only in cases where it is not in conflict with the purposes of punishment, which means the general and personal prevention objectives to be achieved this way. This is of prime importance nowadays when Bulgaria as EU member state has to meet established standards of humane treatment of wrongdoers.
