Abstract

This is a study of Bulgarian and Hebrew Noun + Noun constructions, where the two nouns are not connected by a preposition, cf. Bulg. чаша вода, чаша коняк, кола дърва, филия хляб, батарея бутилки, снага топола, майка героиня, Професор Петров, Професор Петрова. As to Bulgarian, this is a philosophical question of deciding which of the two “zeroes” is stronger. The author analyzes the problem with the help of his own concepts of “semantic government”, “semantic apposition”, “strong and weak apposition” and considering semantic roles and syntactic functions. A contrastive classification of the phrases is offered, based on individual semantics and on the relationship between semantics and syntax.
