Abstract
The following article considers the semantic change of the anaphoric pronoun (2. sg) in the historical context of Old Bulgarian grammar and liturgy. During the mess Old Bulgarian texts – written as scriptio continua – were allegedly being sung resp. rhythmically recited by praying loudly (or silently). Therefore, a multidisciplinary approach is required. Applying the tools of Medieval grammar and liturgy descriptive analysis is further supported by findings yielded by psychoanalysis and methods it employs, since the semantic transformation of the anaphoric pronoun (2. sg) needs psychologically driven explanation as well.
Keeping that in mind the grammar transformation of the anaphoric pronoun is highlighted here on the basis of selected Old Bulgarian quotations using the tools of the grammar valency model of Lucien Tesnière. The paper shows how semantically expressive morphemes supported the change touching upon the syntactically allocated structure of the “semantically weak” anaphoric pronoun (и) as a direct object (Accusative). The semantically “less expressive” Accusative form (и) was subconsciously pushed away during the rhythmic reading resp. singing in the mess and replaced by the “more expressive” Genitive morpheme (его) being established as a Genitive-Accusative form (2. sg). That change was provoked also by the homophonic redundancy of the pronoun (1.sg = 2.sg) and balanced by other semantically “more stable” morphemes which sometimes brought a realignment of the semantic valency type of the verb structure in a specific syntactic allocation.
