Abstract
ABSTRACT: The object of this research is the Color Language. Color Language is when to the colors are given additional, non-color meanings such as ‘death’, ‘love’, ‘femininity’, ‘masculinity’, ‘hope’ and many others. Such semantisation is a culturisation of the prototypes for color in Rosch’s sence. The color language acts in two different areas: 1. At the visual perception of the color; 2. At natural language basic color terms. It is a research on the case of the color language in its functioning at the area of a natural language. There are two approaches here — 1. To describe the meanings of the color terms out of context, i.e. at the Bulgarian Norm for Word-Association for Color Terms; 2. To describe the contextual use of such non-color meanings of the color terms. This means to follow what are the uses of the word-associations from the Norm into Bulgarian novels. The final result is a not very long list of universal meanings of the colors - ‘hope’, ‘live’, ‘alive’, ‘hate’ for green, ‘love’, ‘hate’ for red, ‘purity’, ‘immaculate’, ‘God’, ‘pure’ for white, ‘death’, ‘burial’, ‘tears’, ‘suffer’ for black. The conclusion is that there are normative and non-normative uses of the color terms in the novels. The verbalised non-color meanings are compared to the non-verbalised color meanings (Almalech. Balkan Folk Colour Language, Sofia university "St. Kliment Ihridski" Press, Sofia, 1996). The kernel normative non-color meanings are universal. They represent the Cooperative pragmatic principle which works between the author-addressant and the reader-addressee. The normative and non-normative textual meanings of the color terms are also illustration of the Intentional pragmatic principle.
